Viva voce (oral) examinations are used in a majority of doctoral programs in counselor education across the U.S.; however, their mysterious and subjective nature contrasts with current professional trends toward transparency and objectivity in student assessment. The evolving history of Ph.D. vivas, their assets and liabilities for counselor education, and a structured model for aligning counselor education vivas with current trends will be presented and discussed.
